Rebecca Flinn, a Year 11 OsKings’ student, has successfully completed her work experience at The Daily Mail in London. This was one of her prizes for winning ‘Editor of the Year’ at the 2025 Shine School Media Awards for her work towards the school magazine, ‘#Osborne’. Read more about #Osborne HERE
Rebecca wrote about her experience:
I arrived at the office of The Daily Mail and was given a security pass. I waited in reception for Peter to be ready and then I walked through to the large writing office, with lines of desks with computers. I met Peter Knight who I was shadowing for the day. We started with a tour of the building which right now is under refurbishment. The things that I particularly remember are the food hall, the trophy cabinet and the Sports’ department.
After the tour I sat down at a desk and was given the job of finding small articles in recently published magazines that I think might be popular stories in upcoming newspapers. I found that the recent protests about asylum seekers, and weight-loss pills, are going to be important and of interest to the public. While I was working on this, Liz Hunt the editor, came to introduce herself gave me a timetable for the day. I went into her office and we talked about my school magazine, and how the Daily Mail office works throughout the day. Then she took me to the fashion cupboard full of clothes! The majority of the clothes were red, we noticed. Liz showed me the fashion cupboard because the edition of #Osborne that I edited and for which I won the award, was based on fashion.
At 12.30 I left the office for lunch with my Mum and returned at 1.30.
Sitting back down at the desk, Pete gave me my next task. He emailed me a Word document on the feature of ‘On This Day’ for September 1st, and, for example, there were four celebrity birthdays and I had to pick the two I thought to be most significant. There were also famous people who had died on this date, and historical events.
Osborne School and The Shine School Media Awards would like to thank The Daily Mail for this wonderful experience.
