Smart Phones at Osborne School

‍We are writing to inform you of an important change to our school policy regarding the use of smart phones on site. This is informed by the recent government advice on the use of Smart Phones in school.

From Wednesday 1 of July, all smart phones brought into Osborne School and the OsKings’ provision by students must be handed into the school office every morning upon arrival. Phones will be securely locked away and returned at the end of the school day. Students at the OsKings’ provision can lock their phones in their lockers. We strongly encourage students to leave their phones at home wherever possible.

Why we are making this change

Over the past year, we have carefully monitored the impact of smart phones on learning, wellbeing, and behaviour. Research across the UK shows that mobile phones in school environments can have significant negative effects. Several key findings have influenced our decision:

• Reduced concentration and academic performance: Studies show that the presence of a smartphone—even when not in use—can lower attention levels and interfere with working memory. This can make it harder for students to focus and engage fully in lessons.

• Increased anxiety and distraction: Notifications, social media pressures, and the temptation to check devices contribute to increased stress and reduced ability to remain calm and present during the school day.

• Negative effects on social interaction: Schools that have restricted phone access report improved communication between students, stronger friendships, and more active participation during breaks and lunchtimes.

• Safeguarding concerns: Mobile phones can lead to issues such as inappropriate messaging, access to unsuitable online content, and challenges with online conflict that can continue into school hours.

Many schools across the country have introduced similar policies and have found that behaviour improves, lesson disruption decreases, and students benefit from a calmer, more focused learning environment.

What this means for students

• Students bringing a phone must hand it in at the office before registration.

• Students at the OsKings’ provision can store their phones in their lockers.

• Phones will be stored securely and returned at the end of the school day.

• Students are not permitted to keep phones in bags/pockets during school hours.

• If a student continually refuses hand their phone in, it can be confiscated by teaching staff and we will be asking for the device to be kept at home.

If your child needs to contact you urgently during the day, the school office will always assist with phone calls. Likewise, if you need to reach your child, please call the school directly.

Our shared aim

We understand that smart phones are a normal part of everyday life, and many families use them for safety and communication. This decision is not about restricting independence, but about ensuring that Osborne School remains a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment for all students. Students who require a device to support their self-regulation or specific behavioural needs may use an alternative device, such as an iPad, where appropriate. Please discuss this with your class teacher.
